Dear Birchmount Collegiate students, welcome!

Today, you will exercise your brains…you will flex your creative muscles…and you will build an idea!

You and your fellow classmates will work together in thinking of an idea for a smartphone application or website based on various data sets you will find below.  It can be ANYTHING that you think would benefit either your community, or society-at-large.

But first, we need you to click here

DATA SETS TO CHOOSE FROM (in alphabetical order)

Australia
Bahrain
British Columbia
California
Canada
Chicago
Chile
Edmonton
India
Ireland
Mississauga
New York City
New York State Senate
Ontario Ministry of Environment
Ottawa
Peel Region
Portland
Saudi Arabia
Toronto
The World Bank

Then, put together a 1-minute “pitch” to present and choose one person from your team to showcase your idea to the judges and the rest of your class.

The judges will then ask your whole team questions and provide you all with feedback.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BRAINSTORMING YOUR IDEAS
-What data set will you be using?
-What impact will this have on the community?
-What level of community does this target? Local, nationwide, world?
-How does this help the community? Who does it help?
-Who can use this? Everyone? A certain group of people?
-Could this be on several different platforms? Computer, mobile … etc.
-If this isn’t based in Canada, could this be adapted to other countries?
